Physical Characteristics. Okeechobee County is west of the Ft. Pierce area and north of Lake Okeechobee and is bordered by Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Osceola, Highlands, and Glades counties. The county has 770.49 square miles of land and 120.70 square miles of water for a total of 891.19 square miles. The average January temperature is 63.3 degrees fahrenheit, and the average August temperature is 81.3 degrees fahrenheit. The average annual rainfall is 47.90 inches.
History. Okeechobee county was established from portions of Osceola and Brevard counties in 1917. The name is derived from two Hitchiti Indian words-Oki meaning "water" and Choci meaning "big."
